As far as golf balls go there are 2 piece models with Surlyn covers and 3 or 4 piece golf balls with Urethane covers and each offers their own benefits based on which type of golfer you are. However, finding a golf ball that is affordable these days is getting tougher as prices are just going up every year, so I have found a company who0 offers both options and at an affordable price.
The company is Sugar Golf, and I have written about their golf balls several years ago and now that they have come out with a new 4-piece model I had to give it a try, along with their 2-piece soft golf ball. Both golf balls come in a unique 8 ball box which in my opinion is just the right number of golf balls to really see if that is the golf ball for you.
First, the Sugar Golf 2-piece Soft model and who it benefits most from the company…
Sugar Golf’s SOFT model is a 2-piece, surlyn golf ball that brings tour-level performance to golfers with slow swing speeds. A new ball design incorporates state-of-the-art manufacturing and QA processes for industry-best core concentricity and cover consistency. Large, low compression core designed for delivering greater energy transfer to maximize ball speed for slower sing speeds. Low compression rating of 70 minimizes driver spin, ensuring consistent flight and accuracy. 2-piece construction and a durable surlyn cover, delivers a soft feel while maximizing distance off the driver. Mid-to-high trajectory, combined with steeper descent angles, offers excellent greenside control for precision iron and wedge shots. The SOFT is a high performance 2-piece surlyn golf ball that is perfect for golfers seeking effortless distance, high launch, and a touch of finesse. Ideal for recreational golfers, the Sugar SOFT is engineered for slow to moderate swing speeds (50-75 mph) and a must-have for enhancing your game. 8 balls in each cube / box.
Next, is the Sugar Golf 4-piece Quad golf ball, and who it benefits from the company…
The QUAD is a premium 4-piece urethane golf ball that deliver tour-level performance, crafted in the same factories as the big-name brands you already know. Crafted for lower handicaps and serious golfers, the Sugar Quad Golf Ball is designed to optimize performance for swing speeds above 95 mph. A new design incorporates state-of-the-art manufacturing and QA processes for industry-best core concentricity and cover consistency. Proprietary urethane technology provides a reactive and durable cover for tour-caliber performance. Multi-material core created with explosive elasticity technology designed to deliver maximum energy transfer for greater ball speed. A compression rating of 95-100, delivers low driver spin for exceptional distance and precision. Dimple design reduces air resistance and increases stability. 4-piece construction with proprietary mantle blend for speed off the club face. 8 balls in each cube / box. USGA conforming.
Since my golf swing is really in the middle of the range of a 2-piece golf ball and a 4-piece golf ball, I tested both over 6 rounds of golf each. The Sugar Golf golf balls look identical, but I can assure you they play somewhat differently. The 2-piece Surlyn golf ball my golf ball flight and accuracy with my driver was improved and straighter than normal which is a big plus. It did launch on the higher side which is great for getting your golf ball to stop on the greens.
As far as the 4-piece Quad golf ball, I noticed a more piercing golf ball flight and the golf ball was actually a bit longer than the soft model. I also noticed more check-up around the greens, and I assume that is due to the more expensive Urethane golf ball cover. I then asked one of the long hitters in my group to hit a few drives with the 4-piece model and he was crushing it. He was at least 10-15 yards longer than a very well-known brand name golf ball.
Overall, I was very impressed by both golf balls, based on my testing I would be better off with the Soft model and it went almost as far and had a little softer feel while putting which I prefer. The Soft model also had a slighter higher launch which helped the golf ball stop quicker with my iron shots into the green. The 4-piece Quad had more greenside spin, and I can see how higher swing speed players would prefer this model.
